A few days ago, Jingchen Technology has exhibited demonstration boards equipped with Android TV 9 Pie system, using Amlogic S905X and S905X2 main control chips respectively. Amlogic has four chips to confirm that it is “send”, which is definitely the leading rhythm in the industry. However, although it is confirmed that Amlogic S905X and S905X2 will be equipped with Android 9.0 system, but the chip released at present can only be equipped with Android 8.1 system. It seems that Jingchen Technology needs to further refine and optimize the code of Android 9.0, making it more suitable for TV operation. surroundings. It is worth mentioning that the S905X chip on display can also run Android 9.0 system smoothly when using 1G running memory, which is a good news for low-priced devices.

Android 9 Pie is Google's latest operating system. At present, in addition to Google's own mobile devices, there are very few devices equipped with Android 9.0 system. Amlogic's speed in system iteration update will be far behind. On the other hand, Ruixinwei, the Android SDK was released shortly before, and it seems that it still stays at the stage of Android 7.0. However, this may also be due to the advantages of the SoC. After all, Ruixin Micro has updated its product line in the first half of 2018 and has entered the mass production and solution provider evaluation stage. Although Amlogic's new generation of chips came a bit late, it is indeed worth waiting for. In addition to the system's update iterations, there are also many bright spots in the hardware. The 12nm process technology is considered to be a true next-generation product. At present, the friends are still basically at the 28nm stage. The graphics processor is also the first to enter the Mali-Gx era, supporting HDMI2.1 and 4K@75fps hard decoding.

Unlike Ruixinwei and Quanzhi's platform-based strategy, Jingchen Technology focuses on the home audio and video market. Many of the updates of this product are for the use of living room audio and video, such as resident voice wake-up, AI function, 8-phase horizontal microphone. , low power and other technologies. If it is a home audio and video project Amlogic S905X and S905X2 will be a good choice. We specialize in program operation, customize products according to user needs, and provide customers with one-stop product solutions.

Earlier today, I wrote about the latest version of USB Burning Toolothers like Amlogic S905X upgrade by USB Burning Tooland noticed added support for Amlogic “905D2” processor in the changelog.

I had heard about Amlogic S905X2, but S905D2? Never. I could find information in some recent Buildroot/Linux release notes, and as one would expect it’s another quad core Cortex A53 processor, and likely an update of S905D processor targeting set-top boxes with multiple independent tuners.

Amlogic S905D2 specifications known so far:

·         Processor – Arm Quad Cortex-A53 at up to 1.896 GHz

·         GPU – Arm Dvalin MP2 GPU (Likely meaning Arm Mali-G31MP2)

·         Memory I/F – DDR3/4, LPDDR3/4

·         Security – TrustZone & TVP

·         Video decoding – 4K H265, VP9, and AVS2

·         Video Encoding – 1080p H264 H265

·         Video I/F – HDMI-Tx up to 4K2K, CVBS

·         Ethernet – 10/100M/1000M

·         IP License – Dolby, DTS

There’s no mention about TS or DVB,  but it appears the processor may be clocked faster likely due to a newer manufacturing process – just like S905X2 -, and the Mali-450MP GPU has been replaced by a more recent Dvalin GPU supporting Vulkan and OpenGL ES 3.2.

U200 (S905D2) reference platform is based on the processor, and comes with eMMC flash, Ampak AP6398S 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth 5 module, and 2GB DDR, and it looks like SZwesion may be working on a S905D2 Khadas Vim board too.

While searching for more information on the processor, I found out initial support for S905D2 was added to Zircon, the kernel used in Google Fuchsia operating system.  It’s still unclear what Fuchsia OS will be used for, but Google employees are actively working on the project, and while development hardware platforms are now all based on Intel processors, platform-defs.h linked above has plenty of references to Amlogic processors, so I’d suspect Fuchsia may end up in media streamers, possibly the next revision of the ChromeCast,  or even new version(s) of Google Home smart speaker via Amlogic A113 also supported in Zircon.  It also looks like Fuchsia development are working on development boards support such as Hisilicon Kirin based Hikey 960, and Amlogic logic based Khadas Vim 2 or ODROID-C2.
